Ghosts

Frightening. Terrifying. Transparent. Scary. Dead.

These are all words that are used to describe ghosts.

You may be wondering where I've been. For the last year, I have been undercover in [redacted] trying to understand ghosts' plight. One could say that I'm back from the dead, in a way! After thorough research and a deep-dive into ghost culture, I'm back with the hottest scoop on the block.

The Appearance of Apparitions
A ghost is thought to be the soul or spirit of someone who has passed away. Some believe they're vividly lifelike, while some say they're wispy and see-through. Has anyone thought that ghosts can present however they want to? I'm sick of these expectations of how ghosts should look. Wearing a sheet isn't "basic" and only wearing your outfit from the day you died isn't "lazy." Ghosts can appear however they want, and you have no right to judge them for it.

Specters as Spectators in our Material World
Ghosts sometimes act as spectators, returning to places they frequented in their lifetime. People think that cats can see ghosts, or that they themselves feel a ghost's presence in the room. When they think that a ghost is near, people often panic. Frankly, I'm fed up with people thinking ghosts hang around because of you, a person they never met during their lifetime. Why do you think you're so special? Maybe the ghost isn't in your house, but you are in their house? Have you stopped to consider that? That maybe, just maybe, the world doesn't revolve around you? Huh? Can you get that thought through your thick skull? Huh???

Phantom of the Opera, and Other Media Representations
Back to the program. Ghosts are represented allllll over the media. From the Phantom of the Opera to The Conjuring to The Shining, there are so many hot takes on ghosts out there. Is there truth to them?
There isn't an easy answer. After all, ghosts come in all shapes and hauntings, and I bet there are some nasty spirits out there. But almost every representation of ghosts paints them as scary, ill-intentioned, vengeful. Sure, all ghosts get wound up sometimes, but not every ghost is out to get you! This negative media coverage is definitely harming the reputation of ghosts everywhere. People need to understand that while ghosts can pass through objects in our world, they have so much substance. They have quirks and hobbies, they have hopes and dreams, and they are more than what the media paints them to be.

Spirit Halloween and Other Harmful Tropes
On the topic of ghosts reputation is something that grossly misrepresents ghosts: costumes. Draping a sheet over yourself and shouting "BOO!" may sound like fun, but consider that you're impersonating a person who's passed away and is trapped on this earth forever as a shadow of what they once were. Sounds less fun, doesn't it? This Halloween, maybe opt for a costume of something slightly less dead and slightly more fun, like a sexy Minecraft character or something.

Conclusion
After spending much time researching and hanging out with ghosts, I'm glad I have the opportunity to shed light on their plight. This Halloween, consider mocking lamer undead beings like zombies or vampires instead of ghosts. Happy fall season, and happy haunting!

In my post "Top 10 Kinds of Snakes," I ranked the genus Ninia as #1. Since there are 10 species in the genus Ninia, I thought today I would rank them. Before we get started, let's talk about Ninia snakes all together: they are native to Mexico, Central America, and the northern part of South America. They are commonly referred to as coffee snakes, hence the name of this post. 10. Ninia franciscoi It breaks my heart to rank any kind of coffee snake last, but seeing as I couldn't find any pictures of this species, I have to rank them here. Time to go into my mud hut and cry for seventeen days! 9. Ninia celata I couldn't find a better picture, sorry. But it's still beautiful. 8. Ninia atrata Also called Hallowell's coffee snake. It's wearing a red choker, which is SO 2006, but ...

The Dow Jones Explained

Has this ever happened to you? A well-meaning friend: "The Dow fell by 3 last night" You: "I don't know where 3 is, but did you help it get back up?" You fool. You absolute, hare-brained, rat-brained, rabbit-brained, vole-brained fool. Dude. You're 27. You should know what the hell is up with the Dow Jones. The Dow Jones is a line people put on graphs when they want to feel smart. It was established way before you were born, and it'll exist way after your existence on this planet. Life is temporary, but the Dow Jones is forever. I wrote a sonnet about the Dow Jones Industrial Average to help knuckleheads like you understand it. The Dow Jones, which is also called the Dow, Has thirty corporate constituents, Each of which is a marketplace cash-cow, And is replaced like a substituent, Well really, companies stay for quite long, And aren't replaced unless business is slow, Some people say the Dow Jones's never wrong, But all stock st...
